Florida Amendment 1: Partisan School Board Elections Amendment (2024)
In 2024, voters in Florida will be able to vote on changing the constitution in their state. The state constitution is a set of laws that say what the government can and cannot do. A change in the constitution is called an amendment. The constitution will change if enough people vote for the amendment.
Florida Amendment 1: Partisan School Board Elections is about school board elections. If it passes:
School board elections would become partisan, where people would vote in a primary election first
Partisan: people vote based on their political party, like Democrat or Republican.
Primary: a first election where voters decide which candidate represents each political party
The winners of the primary election would then run in the general election.
The change would only affect elections held after November 2026.
This means that the first partisan school board elections would be in 2026.
The primary elections would happen before the general election in 2026.
Voting “yes” for this amendment means you want it to become law.
Voting “no” for this amendment means you do NOT want it to become law.
Additional Context & Our Stance:
School boards are groups of people who make decisions about schools, like how much money schools get and what classes students take. Some think making school board elections partisan and requiring a primary election would make candidates' political views clearer to voters. Others believe it will cause more political divides. Adding another step to voting for school board members makes it harder for disabled people to have their voices heard, as disabled people may have a harder time voting.
Disabled voters and those who care about us should vote NO to Florida Amendment 1: “Partisan School Board Elections Amendment.”
Voting NO means you do not want there to be a primary election where school board candidates are split up by political party.
