Florida Amendment 4: Right to Abortion Initiative (2024)
In 2024, voters in Florida will be able to vote on changing the constitution in their state. The state constitution is a set of laws that say what the government can and cannot do. A change in the constitution is called an amendment. The constitution will change if enough people vote for the amendment.
Florida “Amendment 4: Right to Abortion Initiative” is about if pregnant people have the right to choose if they stay pregnant. If it passes:
The amendment says that the government can't stop people from having an abortion before "viability." Abortion is a medical procedure that ends a pregnancy. This amendment says “viability” means when the fetus can live on its own. A fetus is what becomes a baby.
The amendment also says that the government can’t stop a person from having an abortion if their doctor says it's needed to keep the pregnant person safe.
The amendment also says that the government can still make rules about minors getting abortions.
Minors are people under 18 years old. The government already makes rules that say that a minor’s parents or guardians need to know about the abortion before it happens. This amendment does not change that rule.
This amendment would change the Florida constitution so that more pregnant people have the choice to decide if they want to stay pregnant.
Voting “yes” for this amendment means you want it to become law.
Voting “no” for this amendment means you do NOT want it to become law.
Additional Context & Our Stance:
Abortion is an important part of healthcare. Abortion: a medical procedure to end a pregnancy. All people deserve the right to make decisions about their own bodies. Disabled people often do not get to make decisions about our own bodies. Protecting Floridians from government interference with abortion also protects disabled people. Some disabled people may not be able to be pregnant due to their disability. No matter why someone may choose to have an abortion, abortion is the choice of the pregnant person.
Disabled voters and those who care about us should vote YES to Florida Amendment 4: “Right to Abortion Initiative.”
Voting YES means you want to change the Florida constitution so the state government cannot limit abortion as much as they can right now. Voting yes means you want the Florida constitution to protect more pregnant people’s right to to decide if they want to stay pregnant.
