Florida Amendment 5: Annual Inflation Adjustment for Homestead Property Tax Exemption Value Amendment (2024)
In 2024, voters in Florida will be able to vote on changing the constitution in their state. The state constitution is a set of laws that say what the government can and cannot do. A change in the constitution is called an amendment. The constitution will change if enough people vote for the amendment.
Florida “Amendment 5: Annual Inflation Adjustment for Homestead Property Tax Exemption Value Amendment” is about homeowner taxes. If it passes:
People who live in their homes can get Up to $25,000 some money back from their taxes. This is called a "homestead exemption."
Anyone who legally owns real estate and lives there long enough to be a “permanent resident”, either for themselves or someone who depends on them legally, won’t have to pay taxes on that property, except for special cases.
real estate: land and anything that is permanently attached to it, like houses, buildings, or trees. It includes both the natural parts of the land, and the man-made structures that are built on it.
Permanent resident: someone who lives in a place for an indefinite amount of time.
People who are older and have lived in their homes for a long time can get even more money back from their taxes.
Veterans or first responders can get money back from their taxes. This helps people who have served in the military or worked as first responders pay less in taxes.
Veteran: someone who has served in the US Armed forces
First responder: someone who is trained and has the job of quickly arriving at the scene of an emergency to provide help. This includes people like police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and emergency medical technicians (EMTs). They are usually the first ones to arrive when there’s an accident, fire, or other emergency situation, and their job is to protect people, provide medical care, and ensure safety until more help arrives.
If a veteran who has this discount passes away, and their spouse owns and lives there, the discount continues for the spouse until they marry again or sell the property. If the spouse sells it, a discount can be moved to the new property, as long as they live there most of the time and they haven’t remarried.
Voting “yes” for this amendment means you want it to become law.
Voting “no” for this amendment means you do NOT want it to become law.
