Virginia Constitutional Amendment: Virginia Property Tax Exemption for Veterans and Surviving Spouses Amendment (2024)
In 2024, voters in Virginia will be able to vote on changing the constitution in their state. The state constitution is a set of laws that say what the government can and cannot do. A change in the constitution is called an amendment. The constitution will change if enough people vote for the amendment.
Virginia Property Tax Exemption for Veteran and Surviving Spouses Amendment is about tax exemptions for the married partners of veterans. If it passes:
Spouses of soldiers who died from serving in the military would be allowed to have a tax exemption.
Tax exemption: allows someone to not have to pay taxes on something
Spouses: married partners
Words will change in the Virginia Constitution about property tax exemptions for veterans and surviving spouses to say died in the line of duty rather than killed in action. Spouses of people who were killed in action already can get this exemption. This amendment would expand it.
Voting “yes” for this amendment means you want it to become law.
Voting “no” for this amendment means you do NOT want it to become law.
Additional Context & Our Stance:
This amendment would mean that more people whose spouses died while serving in the military would not have to pay property taxes on their houses. This amendment would expand the property tax exemption that already exists to include more people. Many people are disabled by the military. Many surviving spouses are disabled. However, taxes help pay for public goods that help all disabled people, not just ones connected to the military. Tax exemptions mean less taxes and less money that can go to public goods that help disabled people, like schools and roads.
Disabled voters and those who care about us should vote NO to Virginia Constitutional Amendment: “Virginia Property Tax Exemption for Veterans and Surviving Spouses Amendment.”
Voting NO means you do NOT want more surviving spouses to not pay property taxes.
